Prantl’s Bakery creates black-and-gold “Terrible Torte” to celebrate 160 years in Pittsburgh

Press Release
PITTSBURGH, Dec. 12, 2023:
Prantl’s Burnt Almond Torte is known far and wide as a singular specialty of Pittsburgh. To make the connection even more precise, the Terrible Torte will be lining up with the steel curtain starting December 15th.
The Terrible Torte, which will have a limited supply, is made of torte cake with black and yellow “jimmies” baked in and filled with vanilla pastry cream. The cake is topped with our famous buttercream icing and covered with Prantl’s signature toasted almonds and black-and-yellow “jimmies.”
“It’s called the Terrible Torte, but it’s actually delicious,” says Prantl’s President Jeff Pastor. “We’re thankful to be carrying on the Prantl’s tradition in Pittsburgh and think this holiday season is the perfect time to put a new black-and-gold spin on our most beloved item.”
It’s $29.99 and available for pre-orders starting December 15th while supplies last. Orders can be placed online or by calling Prantl’s Bakery at 724-837-3706.
Combining two Pittsburgh traditions, the Terrible Torte was created to celebrate Prantl’s Bakery, a beloved name in Pittsburgh’s culinary landscape for 160 years. Henry Prantl’s bakery on Walnut Street in Shadyside opened in 1966, but the name goes back to his family’s bakery on the North Side to 1863.
